February is American Heart Month. Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. It causes 1 in 3 deaths each year, which is approximately one woman every minute!
Here are some tips on preventing heart disease:
1. STOP SMOKING
Smoking damages the cells that line the arteries, increases blood clotting, and increases your blood pressure and heart rate and the effects of secondhand smoke can be almost as damaging, which means that your cigarette habit may even be putting the health of the people around you at risk
2. Eat Fiber
There are lots of ways to incorporate more fiber in your diet: Eating whole grains such as oatmeal, barley, quinoa, and brown rice; beans and lentils; and nuts, seeds, and fruit. You can also try eating soy products in moderation.
Fiber is also known to:
Lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels
Lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes
Lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure
Lower risk of heart disease
Lower risk of diabetesHealthier weights and lower rates of obesity
3. Exercise regularly
The American Heart Association recommends getting 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week. I’m guilty of getting caught up with life and not exercising daily like I should, but I’ve found ways to enjoy it. I hate going to the gym, but I love to dance, so I do Zumba in the comfort of my own home. Jump roping and kettle bell workouts are another favorite of mine. You don’t need a gym to exercise. Take a walk at a local park, around your neighborhood, or make an excuse to go window shopping. 😉
4. Sleep well
Lack of sleep and poor sleeping habits are tied to diabetes, high blood pressure, strokes, heart failure, and sleep apnea.
5. Take supplements
Magnesium, fish oil, and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) are known heart healthy supplements!
6. Be happy, laugh a lot!
Depression and stress have both been shown to harm cardiovascular health. Stay positive…it can’t hurt! 😉
Lately, I’ve been eating my breakfast as a snack because it’s so delicious and filling..
These Natural Valley Roasted Nut Crunch Bars (gluten free) are perfect to keep in your purse, gym bag, and at your desk. I’m all about delicious convenience!
They’re so good that I wanted to crush them up and add them to my Greek yogurt that I eat every morning.
Just add a couple bars to your blender and you’re set.
I crush a nice batch and keep it in a mason jar.
This is such a treat for me because I can’t find gluten free granola in my area.
It’s so good that I enjoy for my afternoon snack, too.
