When I mention Give Kids the World to locals, people either light up and tell me how amazing the organization is or don’t have a clue. Unfortunately, more people don’t know what I’m talking about. I was recently invited to their annual Blogger Bash where they invite local bloggers to tour their property, get us up to date on news and let us experience what it’s like in this magical storybook resort.
It was my first time being in their brand new Town Hall which features a huge dinning room and cafeteria with lots of options!
This Village is a 70-acre resort complete with 144 Villa accommodations, entertainment attractions, whimsical venues, and fun specifically designed for children with special needs. My first time at Give Kids the World was in 1997. My Acting troop volunteered time putting on plays/singing Christmas carols to the children. At Give Kids the World, Christmas, Halloween and Mayor Clayton’s birthday are celebrated every week.
Through out the day, they have crafts, playground time (rides included) and pool parties.
They even have an ice cream parlor where you can have ice cream for breakfast because why not?!
Every family stays in their top of the line resort style Villa. If for whatever reason they are completely booked, Give Kids the World sends them to stay on Disney property.
Each Villa has a kitchen, laundry area, comfortable rooms and bathrooms with disability access.
Volunteers play a huge role at Give Kids the World. They’re everywhere from greeting you from the moment you step on property, serving meals, yard work, decorators, housekeeping, leading parties/parades and delivering goodies to the villas. There’s so many other ways to volunteer, but those are the ones I can think of at the moment.
It’s common for celebrities to stop by, hang out with the kids and volunteer.
The legendary Wally Amos (Famous Amos, now The Cookie Kahuna) stopped by to make his delicious cookies for their annual Black and White Gala. It was such an honor to make cookies with him and my friends. He said his secret is to make cookies with lots of love. Wally was a man on a mission with lots of smiles and jokes.
I also caught Papa John’s , John Schnatter on property. The kids went absolutely crazy for him!
He posed for pictures, signed autographs, passed out free pizza gift certificates and handed out toy cars which were replicas of his car.
John brought in two buses from corporate to volunteer for the day. They did everything from yard work, cleaning and painting.
Recently, Kevin Bacon battled in an Ice Cream Challenge
Can you see why I love this place? They do whatever they can to make the children and their families comfortable and have a magical time.
