As much as I love the fall/winter seasons, I’ve had far too many holidays ruined because I was under the weather. It always happened when I traveled, too. Most of my Christmases are spent out of state. I share the same air with 100 strangers in an airplane for a few hours, land and get hit with freezing temperatures. All of that shocks your system and truly takes a toll on your body. I’m happy to report that in recent years, after learning about proper nutrition, I rarely get sick.
First thing first, immune health starts in your gut. It took me a long time to make the connection, but when I talk to others about the immune system, they’re just as lost. Your digestive system is a machine and basically command center. Eat plenty of fiber, probiotics and stay away from fatty meat.
I love citrus, my house is always stocked with this bad ass antioxidant. You shouldn’t wait until last minute to be all up in it’s goodness.
Vitamin C is a water-soluble nutrient that is vital to all creatures. Everyone knows that it’s great for your immune system but did you know that it is also necessary for collagen, the main structural protein found in connective tissue? Ladies, listen up! We lose Collagen and elastin as we age. Not only will Vitamin C keep you healthy, but it’ll preserve your sexy.
I like to add high potency Vitamin C Powder to my water. Whole Foods and various health food stores sell jars of powder that range from 227 grams- 5,000 grams.
Rumor has it that the capsaicin in hot peppers can help boost the immune system. Chock full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, Vitamin C and Beta-Carotene. I say if you don’t have issues with spicy foods, give it a go!
Lately, I’ve been all about ginger tea. This root has magical properties: reduces morning sickness, improves digestive system, fights infections, and reduce indigestion pain just to name a few.
This isn’t cute but if you’ve been following me for awhile, you know how much I love green juice/smoothies. Some days, I juice, other days, I throw everything in a blender with coconut water. I personally don’t like to get too crazy with the fruit because I like to watch my sugar intake but seriously, do I really have to tell you how great greens are? A handful of kale, spinach, lemon and a green apple. BAM!
If you feel like you’re coming down with something, Cold-Eeze will be your best friend. It’s loaded with Zinc and plenty of goodness to help reduce your systems. I’m not too fond of the taste but it works, so I always have a box at home.
And last but not least, if you are sick, the last thing you want to do is cook your own food. I’ve learned the hard way many times. There’s nothing worse than waking up with a cold, starving and alone. It’s time to fill up the pantry, guys! My personal faves from Progresso are Garden Vegetable and Chicken Tortilla.
