Even though they’re completely silent, they interact with the audience. One of my favorite moments of the night was when they brought someone up to the stage to do improv.
How many of you are Blue Man Group fans? I went to my first show a few weeks ago and the responses I got were 50/50. One set of friends gushed about how amazing the show was, the others? They expressed how freaky the blue men looked, but they’ve never attended a show. I hate to say this, but I was totally negative about BMG, too. I’m ashamed because I’m one of those “you gotta try it at least once!” people. Something about silent blue men that stare at you bothered me.
THERE’S A HAPPY ENDING (sorry, had to throw that in for the Millennials.)
Here are some cellphone pictures because photography is not allowed during the show.
The Blue Man Group show is located at Universal Orlando’s City Walk. Florida residents park for free in the enclosed garage after 6:00 pm when they show proof of residency. I suggest getting to the theater about 45-30 min before show time. Actually, being late is frowned upon. In fact, they will stop the show and put attention on you and your family.
I would make an evening out it. Grab dinner, drinks and chill. You can do all of this after the show as well, because City Walk is open until 2 am, 365 days a year. There’s plenty of sit down restaurants, fast food joints, snacks, bars and shops to enjoy.
When you get off the moving sidewalk from the garage, you’ll walk towards Universal Studios. The BMG theater is right next to the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Coaster, outside of the theme park. You can’t miss it. The walk is about 15 minutes long.
Follow the signs.
Outside of the theater is a little bar, called Liquid Fusion.
As you can see in the pic above, the bar has bottled beer (American premium 7.50, Imported 7.75), wine (White 7.75, Red 7.75) and specialty cocktails (11.50). I’m not really into super sweet girly drinks, but I was leaning towards the Oxytocin Booster because I love pineapple. The bartender said that the Tropical Mandelbrot was the best seller, also her favorite, so I ordered it.
This bar does NOT accept tips from your credit card.
Sorry this is so big, but it bothered me. Our girl was nice, hustled in the heat. I rarely carry cash, but luckily had some bills on me. If I didn’t tip her, I would have felt horrible.
Don Q Silver Rum, Passoa Simple Syrup, Pineapple Juice.
This fruity concoction made me feel like I was on vacay.
THANKS FOR TELLING ME MY HAIR WAS MESSED UP PEOPLE
Because I’m worth it.
No, seriously. Get one, or two, or five.
The doors opened about 30 minutes before show time. Finding the seats was easy, everything seemed organized. There’s also concession stands in the lobby.
Funny messages started popping up on the screen like “John Brown, the person that rear ended your car is behind you.”
“Today is Sarah Smith’s birthday, let’s all wish her a happy birthday” and they made us say the happy birthday song, not sing it. It all sounds weird and not as funny as I type it, but everyone was genuinely laughing. I’m the biggest hater but found myself laughing out loud, enjoying the weirdness.
15 minutes before they go live, alerts on the screen let the audience know that they should hit the restrooms. Absolutely no cell phone use or cameras are allowed while they perform. Again, they will stop the show and put all the attention on you.
There is a poncho section, which is the first five rows. Guests are given ponchos, but the site claims that the substances that may get on clothing are washable. Wearing dry cleaned only clothes is not recommended.
You guys, I really wasn’t prepared for this. I’m known to fall asleep during movies, like Star Wars and Jurassic Park (how in the world did I sleep through roaring dinosaurs?). My attention span is short, sitting down for long periods annoy me.
The Blue Man Group comes at you at full force. It’s a theatrical experience that combines comedy, rock concert and a dance party rolled into one.
This multi-sensory event is by far one of my favorite shows that I’ve been to in a long time.
What I loved about this show was that I was in the moment. Not once did I have the urge to look at my phone. I also laughed a lot. I love to laugh!
This is a family friendly show. In fact, they showed the importance of being together through art. The message of the night was how sharing experiences, being together and in the moment releases happy hormones. I couldn’t agree more.
In the end, we all celebrated with a crazy dance party!
I asked someone in marketing if the blue men were aliens or humans, this was their response:
“The Blue Men aren’t aliens, but they’re also not necessarily human. The Blue Man character is a very curious, stripped down version of ourselves that are exploring our world with a heightened sense of reality.”
So, there ya go, folks.
It takes approximately 17 crew members to run each show. This includes props, wardrobe, sound, video and stage management.
Blue Man Group Orlando performs content you can’t see anywhere else. It is consistently the top rated show in the theme park.
The Blue Man Group currently has on going theatrical productions in Las Vegas, Boston, Orlando, Berlin and New York. Along with a North American and World Tour.
They have released six albums and have also been nominated for a Grammy.
I just read that Blue Man Group supports Autism, read here . They’ve recently announced that they plan to host a set of sensory-friendly shows suitable for children with autism in five major cities over the next year. BMG had special sensory-friendly shows in Orlando last December. This is simply amazing.
Things that I noticed:
There was a lot of strobe light action. I actually looked up on their website to see if there was a warning for people with strobe light sensitivity or Epilepsy. The following was stated:
“Strobe lights are used during portions of the show. If people sensitive to strobe lights decide to attend the show, they should alert the House Manager when they arrive. Upon request, a member of the house staff will help the patron leave the theatre before the strobes occur.”
The theater is completely handicapped accessible
