I feel like I constantly tell everyone “this past year was huge for me”. That’s a good thing, right? But seriously, my life has been whirlwind full of surprises, adventure and even heartache. 2016 was my year of travel, hopping from plane to plane from the Caribbean, West Coast, East Coast, Asia and Micronesia. As cool as this all sounds, I was still working. Deadlines were in demand while I was trying to adapt to time changes and culture shock. Weight packed on as I felt like I was losing control.
I decided to hop on the scale this past January in D.C., I was mortified. The kicker is, I didn’t do anything about it until May because my schedule was so chaotic. As I’m going through my photos for this post, I am kind of embarrassed but damn it, I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
About two weeks after I started working out on my own, Planet Fitness contacted me to give me a free work out session. Since I was a member of this gym in South FL, I decided to give it a go.
I actually had a Planet Fitness and Crossfit membership at the same time. Why? Because Planet Fitness was chill and I couldn’t be in CF psycho mode every day. They actually say that they are a Judgement Free Zone, which I appreciate. My cousins are so into fitness, owning gyms and competing in Crossfit games, which kind of makes me an expert because DUH..but even I get intimidated in the free weight areas at globo gyms.
Planet Fitness offers a diverse environment, giving their members education to a long-lasting fit lifestyle.
I started off on the weight floor with my trainer Knutt. He said 3 sets, 15-20 reps is the way to go. We worked on shoulders, arms, and glutes because I’m all about a full body work out.
But a certain area of Planet Fitness caught my eye, their circuit training room. Because I’m short on time, this would be the area I would hit up the most. You can finish the circuit in about 30 minutes.
I love using my body weight during resistance training.
There were other weight machines in this area as well.
Knutt said that it’s best to finish with cardio after you participate in any kind of weight lifting which is something my family has always said. The point is to put all your energy towards lifting weights. Cardio is wonderful and all but you only burn during the time of cardio. Lifting weights is major because your muscles are still burning up to 12-24 hours after your lifting sesh!
For two months I’ve been weight lifting and ending my workouts with HIIT cardio sessions.
These photos were taken about a month after I started getting serious about my routine.
And this photo was taken a week ago at Miami Swim Week, two months after getting serious. There’s nothing like slipping into my favorite summer styles with tons of confidence!
I’m very proud of how far I’ve come. 17 lbs down, feeling better than ever. Planet Fitness was kind enough to let me give away a one-month Black Card membership to one lucky reader. We all need that little jump start, I hope this opportunity will inspire someone. If I can do this, anyone can.
All you have to do is comment below with your favorite work out. Winner will be randomly chosen on August 7th.
Good luck. xo
